Week 1, Lesson 1: How to Read Korean

Our first lesson is up!
Please excuse my awkwardness. I suck at presentation.

I have no idea whether Hangul will show up on your computers.
I also don't know cleverer ways to attach Word files. Enlighten me!

Link to Google Docs Hangul chart thanks to Phlexonance

This one is much better than mine. Print out that one.

Flashcards thanks to nickknw

  1. I'm so going to have to watch this 50 times... Good job.

  2. Thank you! I wanted to mention that the volume changes at times, and that it is hard to hear what you have to say at times. Are you moving back and forth when recording? Just wanted to let you know. Thanks again for the lesson!!!

  3. Does anyone have tips to memorizing the alphabet faster? Should I make flashcards or something? Either way I am still practicing, but if someone has a more efficient way of doing it, I would love to hear it.

Its pretty hard hearing your pronunciation, because of the volume issue on the video. Its still helpful though, thanks!

  4. Yeah I was holding the mic with my hands so it was sometimes closer to my mouth. I'll find a mic that works better. I had some trouble with the sound because of background noise and stuff.

For memorizing, I believe some people put up some tips on the Google Document. The letters are supposed to look like how you flex your tongue and throat when you pronounce them, but I don't really see that so I'm afraid you would have to memorize them.

I left some stuff off in this video so I'll do a complementary, shorter one soon.

  5. For memorization I think the best way is to remember small words with a variety of different sounds. Like with 밤 (gosh that's small) from the video, it's short and easy to remember how to pronounce. If you remember that it's three characters making up the whole syllable, I think it's easy to remember all the characters' sounds; ㅂ-b ㅏ-ah ㅁ-m. So now if I see those elsewhere, I'll remember the sounds they make. I think memorization will come naturally with learning phrases and vocabulary.

  7. Here's a flash flashcard type thing that will help to memorize most of them: http://www.aeriagloris.com/LearnKorean/ - I found it on here: http://www.learnkoreanlanguage.com/learn-hangul.html

It doesn't have all the vowels, but it sure helps.
